Rules of the forum regarding unauthorised advertising.

Postby eemarket » Wed Sep 02, 2009 1:03 am

Due to us now having a record amount of Sponsors and Forum Advertisers we needed to change some of the forum rules to stop unauthorised advertising on the forum.

It is unfair to paying advertisers to allow unpaid advertising on the Forum.

Not many business forums allow unauthorised advertising, in general, forums can be abused by some of their members promoting their business or an affiliate link or using forums for link building to their e-commerce sites.

It is our opinion that anyone advertising for financial gain should pay for the privilege.
So, there are some fundamental changes to the rules.

1, No unpaid links or graphics in signatures including affiliate links.
These signatures will be allowed only for paid-up Sponsors, Forum Advertisers and Staff and must be for their own businesses only.
All links in signatures will be removed by the Administration, you will then need to pm your sig to an Administrator for inclusion.
2, The www link in a members profile should not be used to link to a commercial site, unless you are a Sponsor or Advertiser.
3, Business co-operations that pay to advertise will have only one advertising account and only one member designated to that account.
4, No unpaid advertising in posts is allowed.
No unpaid advertising will be allowed, but, as an example, passing on business experience will be allowed but not mentioning your own business at the same time.
5, The Chatroom and Shoutbox must not be used for unauthorised advertising.
6, Avatars should not be identifiable as a business advert.
Business identifiable avatars are allowed by Sponsors and Forum Advertisers only.
7, No PM Spam
Even if you're an advertiser or sponsor it is not permitted to send random PM's to members advertising your services. Only if someone has asked you directly to contact them may you PM them.

A note to our members,
You might think it unfair not to allow a sig link to your shop, but, do you realise that if you put your URL in the sig then it gets picked up by Google. This then allows your potential customers to view this forum and then view all of your posts on here, possibly including the source of your items for sale, might even pick up your comments about customers !!.

I had a feeling that this was going to happen as there has been a large increase in advertisers and forum sponsers since I have been a member here.

Anyway I personally think it's a good Idea, though it may take a lot of moderating :-)

These changes were brought about with plenty of input and discussion with the paid sponsors and advertisers, if you ever become an advertiser you will see the discussion thread in their private section of the forum ;)

Probably a well overdue change.

4, No unpaid advertising in posts is allowed.
No unpaid advertising will be allowed, but, as an example, passing on business experience will be allowed but not mentioning your own business at the same time.

I like the above. A lot of advertisers bang on relentlessly about their own business in nearly every post, even on unrelated topics. Just one thought though, will forum members still be able to recommend suppliers etc. other than forum advertisers, in reply to questions. I.e. personal experience, not for gain.

Yes, as long as its not spam, we will view each post on it's own merit.

It would help us if members were to report posts that they have any doubt about by clicking the ! button at the top right of the post.
You will remain anonymous, so no fear of virtual retribution.

This makes a lot of sense :)

I don't envy the mods having to enforce this one especially with so many current members already with sigs in place but I have removed my signature in the spirit of the community - lets hope that others do too and help make the mods lives as easy as possible.

I just went to remove mine, and can see the signature option in my profile any more, am I'm having a blind moment or can I not edit my sig to remove my links?

although I do wonder on the virtues of removing discrete sig links to businesses from active contributing members who add to the forum (lol I don't mean me as I haven't been on much recently just mean in general) when some advertisers only actually make posts to advertise there products/businesses we all know the ones, every single post no matter what it's about will somehow come round to their business/what they're selling, so if you pay to advertise on the forum you can turn any thread into an advertise your business thread (spam) yet those that don't actually mention their business in their posting yet contribute to the forum with good advice and help can't even have a little link in there sig.

Just my thoughts, no big concern to me personally as I do keep an eye on my stats and get almost no traffic from this forum anyhow, just my thinking on the subject.

When I start advertising in just over a week, I was planning of having a new profile but still also advertise on this profile as well, however this is no longer allowed, but it's not a major concern, would have just been a bonus :-)

I agree, legitimate spamming is still spam.

Incidentally, even when I did pay here very little came from this forum, and like you have found, they still don't, so I don't see how the www button link would be a problem for anyone. Not that I use it or intend to in the near furtue but in the interests of people who are legitimate and do contribute to the benefit of all members including paid advertisers, I can't see why that has been banned.

You are too modest Biker though, you have contributed a lot to the forum, as has Paulc10, seems daft to alienate people like you and him.
